The estate rose out of the fog like a held breath, black stone slick under a hunter's moon. She had signed the papers in the car on the way up. Ink, blood, same difference at this altitude.

He was waiting in the doorway. He did not look at her the way a husband looks at a wife. He looked at her the way a man looks at a debt he has already decided how to collect.

“You’re late,” he said. His voice was quiet. Nothing about him was quiet.

She stepped past him into the hall. The door closed behind her with the softness of a vault. Somewhere in the house a clock counted down to something neither of them had agreed to out loud.

The clause was on the desk between them, still warm from the printer. Nine pages. One signature required. One promise implied. He had signed away the right to touch his own wife.

Then he met her.
